The Maui Girl Who Does It All

From bridal to womenswear, HOKU gets to know Maui-based designer, Stephanie Foster.

As we grow older, we come to learn that our self-esteem is often developed gradually through the combination of our friendships, surroundings, and our own will to tap into the things that inspire us the most. That said, there is no doubt that our style is directly related to how we feel about ourselves—perhaps it is one of the most intriguing build ups as we continue to become more confident in who we are. Our fashion sense is constantly evolving and with it, creatives who are simultaneously tapping into their passion for designing to help us all find our own creative freedom through fashion.

Headquartered on the island of Maui, it’s always refreshing to connect with local creatives who are pushing the boundaries of what feels possible today—those who are remaining true to their core values, creating what they love and remaining separate from the norm.  While 2020 has certainly hit us like a wave, we are inspired by those who are riding it in style.

Meet Stephanie Foster, Maui creative and founder of two sustainable lines—FosterPlease and Honua Bridal. Foster is a long-time designer and lover of all things fashion, but when she realized how detrimental the industry was, it seemed like an unattainable path to take. Until it wasn’t. In early 2020, Foster realized that she could continue to pursue her passion while leaving little to no carbon footprint in her track and thus, her sustainable brands Honua Bridal and FosterPlease was born.

Each of her sustainable brands feature riveting pieces that involve sustainability in every form. “Through having two sustainable fashion lines, I’ve learned that staying true to your core values in today’s world isn’t always easy. As awareness in climate change grows, we can see positive changes in the market but it is still not yet easy, or in any way convenient, to be a sustainable company. It takes extensive research, higher-cost, and determination. Overcoming these challenges, however, leads to one of the most rewarding aspects; knowing that I didn’t settle for easier, more cost-effective choices that can harm the planet or support unfair work environments. And above all, showing that it’s possible and inspiring others to make better choices for their companies as well. All the materials I currently use for my garments are organic or recycled and cruelty-free. To me, the fabric is one of the most important choices a fashion company can make to either become more sustainable or contribute to poor Earth and human health. My priority is choosing fabrics that are produced without the use of pesticides, harmful dyes, unfair labor, cruelty to animals, and with less wasted water. I also make sure that I continue to research new options as the industry becomes more forward-thinking.” Foster tells HOKU.

In addition to making sure her pieces can make anyone and everyone feel extraordinarily beautiful, Foster also mentions how strongly she feels that brands like hers be active about addressing social issues and using their voice when they can. “Now I know that not only should I lead by example in doing what I feel is right, but I should have a voice about it too. If we can help spark a new awareness or compassion in someone who is willing to listen without ever putting anyone down in the process, I think we can truly make a difference as individuals. I absolutely plan to use my brands to advocate for issues that speak to me like Climate Change, BLM, and more”. And while FosterPlease and Honua Bridal are still blooming into their fullest form, we are excited to see the ways in which they stand up for change now more than ever. She’s avidly tells HOKU that the most necessary areas of change within the industry revolves around regulations on how fashion/fabric is grown, produced, packaged, and labeled— mentioning how this would directly translate into fewer carbon emissions, healthier work environments, company responsibility and adaptation, and more transparency to consumers. When designing her pieces, Foster mentions that she focuses on creating with a purpose— her simple and flattering collections show great attention to detail while always being something that she would be proud to wear herself.

With an emphasis on sustainability and damn good craftsmanship, Foster’s subtly chic pieces are testament to the beauty of self expression and moving away from your comfort zone to create something that sparks wander in those around you. Handmade, cute and sustainable? We’re still drooling. x
