Toothpaste, tea tree oil, witch hazel, and let’s not forget those Instagram ads featuring ‘made-just-for-you’ products…we’ve tried it all. It’s impossible not to have gone through the struggle of trying to find the perfect quintessential routine for our precious skin. We all know that feeling confident with your skin is a big part of feeling more content and empowered as a whole. That’s why when it comes to skincare, we don’t mess around. The cosmetics industry is notorious for its negative impact on our planet – unethical sourcing of raw ingredients, waste management, chemical and packaging pollution…the list goes on. In fact, Zero Waste reported in 2018 that more than 120 billion units of cosmetics packaging were produced globally and the majority of which is not recyclable.  As consumers, we are becoming increasingly more aware and conscious about the products we use every day - especially the ones that go on our skin! There’s no surprise that natural and organic products have proven to be more effective and healthier for our bodies. That said, we decided to chat with local esthetician, Hillary Navarrette to give us an inside scoop about sustainability, supporting local and the meaning behind her pioneering sustainable skincare line, Lau Botanicals.

Tell us more about the ingredients you use and the most important thing women should focus on when trying to better their skin?

My belief and guiding principle is that natural products optimize health of the earth, the mind, and the body. What you put into your body will show in your skin, but sometimes we need help from something external. What makes Lau Botanicals unique is that our products are organic, plant-derived, and made with local Hawaiian ingredients in small batches. Focus and start with what you are putting in your body and then continue with a simple oil based cleanser.

Tell us more about Lau Botanicals, what inspired you to create a sustainable skincare line?

Lau Botanicals believes in providing the highest quality ingredients while operating as ecologically sustainable as possible. We believe in comprehensive wellness including the mind, body, and soul. Our goal is to promote not only healthy skin but healthy living that does not burden the natural environment. We do this by using ingredients that are free of processing and toxic compounds. We are especially inspired by the Native Hawaiian community - for eons, native communities have achieved harmony with mother earth. Lau Botanicals strives to create the same harmony. Packaging, shipping products, and business activities are performed with this in mind. We also put an emphasis on supporting local farms – we believe that supporting local means everything because you are supporting your community.

How do you keep your products sustainable?

At Lau Botanicals, we believe in 100% sustainability. We bottle every product with recycled glass with bamboo tops. Every wholesale and online order is packaged with useable bags and recycled packing materials. We only have one planet so we have to treat her with respect.

What separates organic ingredients from chemical ingredients that women primarily see on the market?

If you can’t read it, don’t use it!
